COUPLE SMUGGLE WITH POLICE OFFICER

Oak Ridge police are searching for a couple who authorities say were involved in a struggle with officers Tuesday morning outside a convenience store.
In a news release, the Oak Ridge Police Department identified one of the suspects as Sherrius Smith, 20, of Knoxville. They said the other is a 17-year-old girl, whose name and address were not released.
The incident began when officers were dispatched at 1:40 a.m. to the Rocky Top convenience store, 1190 Oak Ridge Turnpike, to investigate a suspicious black sedan in the parking lot, according to the release.
The vehicle was occupied by two people who were reportedly intoxicated and had been arguing after leaving the store, according to police.
When police made contact with the couple, Smith physically resisted one officer and during the struggle both officers entered the front driver’s side door of the sedan, according to the release.
Smith then placed the vehicle into drive and accelerated toward the store, police said. The vehicle was prevented from striking the building when the officer who was attempting to control Smith managed to turn the wheel, directing the vehicle away from the building.
The vehicle struck a steel post in the parking lot, disabling it, according to the release.
Both Smith and the girl fled the scene, according to police.
The release states that multiple charges are pending against Smith, though it doesn’t specify what those charges are.
The investigation remains ongoing.
More details as they develop online and in Wednesday’s News Sentinel.
