Police believed that they have solved the murder of a 2-year-old girl with the discovery of the body of a man suspected to be the murderer in Sungai Klang here yesterday.
City Criminal Investigation Department head Senior Assistant Commissioner Gan Kong Meng said police were alerted by passers-by to a body floating in the river, near Sungei Way.
Gan said checks revealed that the suspect resembled the man seen walking with the girl in a closed-circuit television camera footage obtained earlier.
"There were no identification documents found on the body."
On Thursday night, the man had abducted the girl from Kota Raya Complex before killing her at the riverbank.
In the 9pm incident, the child was found with her head severed. It was believed he had used a ceramic tile to cut her head off.
The man was believed to have drowned after jumping into the river near Jalan Tun Sambanthan, in his bid to evade arrest.
Two witnesses had alerted the police when they noticed the suspect carrying the girl towards the riverbank.

Earlier, the girl's mother, Siti Salmy Suib, 32, had asked a friend to keep an eye on her daughter as she had to go to the restroom. When she returned, the child was missing.
A source close to the investigation said the suspect was identified as Samynathaiar Murugason, 27, who had criminal records, including drug offence.
"His last arrest was last year by the Dang Wangi police over a drug offence," the source said, adding that the suspect had a record of aggressive behaviour.
Gan said the body was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem.
City Fire and Rescue Department chief Azizan Ismail said the search operation near Puchong, which started at 10am, was called off about 3pm, after Petaling Jaya police was informed of the body.
"We roped in our counterparts from Selangor to help in the search but it was stopped after police confirmed the suspect's identity."
