WOMAN WALK 7 MILES TO HOSPITAL WITH TREE BRANCH LODGED IN HER NECK

A 70-year-old Chinese farmer had to walk seven miles to get to a hospital after part of a tree branch became lodged in her neck while she was working in a field.
Su Liyu said she had no choice but to walk to following the incident in the remote Wangxi township in south-western China's Sichuan province.
'I knew I had to do it, that if I relied on anyone else to help I would have died in the field,' she said.

'I had no choice but to walk. It was that or die, and I thought I was too young to die.'
Liyu was working in a field when a branch she pushed away bounced back and part of it lodged in her neck.

She said: 'It wasn't too painful but I could feel it was deep. Certainly too deep for me to pull out on my own.'
As she made her way along the seven-mile route to where she was able to get a lift to the hospital, Liyu came across her niece and accompanied her the way of the way and helped her flag down a car.

She was transferred from the local hospital to the Quxian People's Hospital and then again to Kangcheng Hospital in the city of Dazhou where she underwent a two-hour operation to remove the stick.
Doctor Weng Zhang, who operated on Liyu, said she was lucky the stick did not damage any of the vital components that make up the neck.
He said: 'Luckily, the stick didn't badly harm them or strike the artery. She was a very lucky and a very brave lady.'
